If you can request and drop echoes to your point, that is a new feature since I have seen it. If a person calls as any user, they can - as always - tag or drop echoes with a call in to toggle anything. As the board to call here, is also the NEC's, there's paltry he doesn't carry, and he's *very* hospitable to turning things on with a simple request. I don't know what gave you the idea, but a BBS is still my preference for myself also. I have too many machines on the go at any time, that I like to also equip to run fido. Two specifically, are traded off on the chore often, so pointing would require me to network those two, plus any other coming online. That can *always* be a crap shoot for a newly functioning system, as NICs sometimes putter out, or are having resource arguments, et al. CH> IE: On one system you can be easily confused by the LIST of echos and CH> the separate area where you actually SELECT or de select an echo. CH> IN that case I had to bother the sysop. I just bother mine to add echoes to his board. I've only had to request one, and I see the Sailor Moon echo is no longer making waves, so I can't even bother him to add that. He *is* gating newsgroups. I *can* netmail->e-mail, and vice-versa... All from Blue-Wave AND Multi-Mail for the Linux/*NIX platform... You guys can tie your hands with points all you want, I need to stay loosy-goosy here. <-| CH> With my point, I don't have to wade through a long list. CH> One system has a list of echos with numbers. I was about to ask my guy to make a short list available in a file, but the echolist echo, gives me all the info I need, and if I see a new echo I haven't tagged that I might want, I can usually guess his naming scheme pretty accurately now. Each way does have its advantages, and I guess I just never needed the advantages of pointing. I even started to prefer BW over GoldEd, when I was running a board. I was able to catalogue in a way that shot EVERYTHING available at the time *clear* out of the water. CH> .................. CH> You can do the add delete in qwk door too but on some boards it's CH> tricky. And the only real trouble with BW and Y2K was with running it through the QWK door. It's really a shame more don't run the BW door, as I've heard there is a very small issue with SQUISH if that is your message base, and I think the rest of the basses run just fine or vice versa. It's reported to be a minor issue either way. /-: JB> The BW door was SWEET! No passwords, but what you log on as. In your JB> upload zip, it would toggle on or off as you wished... CH> .................. JB> I knew it. We'd have to manually edit the 'allow' file, with the JB> points preference, then turn on and off echoes as they wished from the JB> sysop console... It was totally laborious! CH> I've no idea what the boss node has to go through at their end. Only CH> mine. I'm grateful for the service. There was a point who would pole me for a bit. There were two or three files to edit, and the syntax had to match, and vary in the right places. Get it right, it just worked. Get one character wrong, and it wouldn't. It's one thing I've never gotten used to to this day. When I try to manually type in my USB UPS, I never get much further than recognizing the gibberish the power supply issues, and nothing further comes of it. I can pull the plug on the power, and the battery drains, and it won't even faze the OS that it should shut down. Maybe I just show my obstinacy, but I refuse to take 'no' as a valid answer. Maybe that's my strength, but it can also be my weakness. I just want to make sure it's not my undoing. CH> Cindy CH> ...
