subject: MS-Kermit on TeleGard/2

Hi Sean,

     About "Nice return!" of January 14:

MS> I DownLoaded `TeleGard/2' in hope i'd be able to test it...
SD> Unless you're running OS/2, you can't get it to install.

     I thought i just might have as much luck as with the `CKOKer16.EXE'
driver version 5A(189) run in a W32 DOS Console box. The DOS version of
`TG' is now installed, nonetheless, which helps me to figure things out!

SD> You'll want TG/DOS, but you'll need to have a FOSSIL driver...
                                                  ^^^^^^
     That's why i have no choice but to use `MS-Kermit' since `C-Kermit'
only supports the COM1-to-COM4 range of Serial-Ports... The `TeleGard`+
`C-Kermit' duo is out of reach for me, there's no remedy that i can see.

SD> As for Kermit, I could always use the DOS version of it written for
SD> Maximus, but I just have to figure out the PDF file.

     I may now be of assistance in your own department. Judging from my
preliminary observations, here's how i can envision `Kermit.PDF' so far:
________________________________________________________________________
PROTOCOL    Kermit
BATCH       N
BIDIRECT    N
UPLOAD Kermit Set Port FOSSIL ~CP, BRcv
DOWNLOAD Kermit Set Port FOSSIL ~CP, BSnd ~PF
ULCODE1     0
DLCODE1     0
ENVIRONMENT Set Kermit=Path C:\PROTOCOL
TEMPLOG
FILELIST
LOG_FILE
LOG_RESULT
SUCCESS     Y
NATIVE      N
NOTE BBSer's side `Kermit' protocol settings
NOTE        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE        Set Window 3
NOTE        Set Streaming On
NOTE        Set Block-Check 3
NOTE        Set File-Type Binary
NOTE        Set Terminal ByteSize 8
NOTE        Set Attributes Date Off
NOTE        Set File InComplete Keep
NOTE        Set File Collision UpDate
NOTE        Set Control UnPreFixed All
NOTE        Set Control PreFixed 0 1 17 19 129
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     I'd much prefer to get the "Batch" option supported but it involves
error trapping based on a .LOG file generated by `MS-Kermit' and i won't
be able to make this work until i can understand how to use the optional
`FileList', `Log_File' , `Log_Result' and `TempLog' parameters - there's
not enough detail about the `DLCode1' and `ULCode1' fields so here's the
.LOG file sample which `MS-Kermit' can produce, in case you get an idea:
________________________________________________________________________
Recv FileName.ZIP
  at 10:31:43 15 JAN 2005, completed, bytes: 915 212
  5384 cps
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     I experimented with my `DLCode1' and `ULCode1' lines defined as "c"
when Batch-Mode was enabled and i made `TempLog' point at ~PT\KERMIT.LOG
while `Log_File' was supposed to designate the .LOG's 2nd word and `Log_
Result' the eight one, with FileList' set to "{at}" (of course). This kept
me trying until my patience plumetted, i must confess... Anaway, if the
present post inspires you sufficiently, simply copy `MS-Kermit v3.16' to
your `PROTOCOL' directory with a slightly modified copy of the `MSK.INI'
file i made public on November 16. Since i find most likely that you'll
be able to ignore `DSZLog' all along, i guess that using the environment
entry to shorten the two command lines is acceptable and that's what the
DOS `Kermit' environment variable does. Now, one last thing: take note
that `Kermit' looks for `MSKermit.INI' by default so you must rename the
`MSK.INI' file accordingly and, while you're at it, don't forget to make
these two modifications because that might be of help in a close future:

          Log Session c:\sbbs\data\Capture.LOG

           becomes

          Log Session C:\PROTOCOL\Capture.LOG

           - and -

          Log Transactions c:\sbbs\data\Kermit.LOG

           becomes

          Log Transactions Kermit.LOG

SD> But you were still pretty impressed at how fast my system is...

     Moving the bottleneck out of the way will certainly be of help so i
do appreciate it but just lets keep in mind that i promote `Kermit' as a
RELIABLE (not a faster protocol) ALTERNATIVE for everyone. A raised cps
rate is a tip which validates configuration changes, should `Kermit' fly
it would prove its good wealth but even a fraction of the top speed will
sound better for one who gets a crawling `ZMoDem' or no transfer at all.

                             Salutations,  P-)
