I too got the free upgrades for my Couriers and have no personal
complaints. :-)

There are still Sportsters on store shelves, advertised on the
packaging as being 56k upgradable (but not, if you look closely,
for free), for which the upgrade comes at additional cost and
involves a modem swap. Office Depot had them priced at $60 less
than those next to them with x2, so I chose to spend the $60 up
front and save the exchange upgrade hassle (to happily find the
x2 modem was on sale for $30 less than the shelf price), but I
could see how the "uninitiate" or unobservant might grab one of
the lesser-priced modems thinking the upgrade would be free. (I
looked closely at the packaging and confirmed my supposition via
the web site before making the purchase.)
In the same vein, the x2 Sportster I bought came with the $50 rebate
sticker on the package, but I saw the offer had expired. Again, the
unobservant might've tried to claim the rebate and become upset when
it wasn't forthcoming.
