apparently my dsl was down at the time...

  Binkd 0.9.11 (Mar 31 2013 22:30:33/Linux)

and apparently ubuntu/debian doesn't update binkd like they do other stuff...
this binkd was installed via the package manager... we've not worried about
trying to build it from source since this works fine...
