         They were indeed hydraulic.  My car (purchased rather late
in the model year) I believe had the third modification, and they
made two more at GM expense.  It was much improved, but never did
completely get rid of the squeal.
         I had three later Chevys with the same engine and it was
a reliable workhorse in them.
