subject: Oh My! (`Oh, My` Indeed

On 01-21-10, JEFF BINKLEY said to TIM RICHARDSON:

TR>Yesterday I had surgery on my left eye. The results are uttely
TR>amazing! Within a couple of minutes, I could see better than I'd ever
TR>seen in my entire life. My eyesight must have always been bad from
TR>birth.

TR>The clarity is astounding! I see colors as they really are, sharp and
TR>clear. I realize that cops really `can' read a license plate from a
TR>long distance, and its not just dumb-ass luck they happen to pull a
TR>car over that had an expired one!

TR>I can't wait for the other eye to be taken care of!

JB>Laser surgery ?

No. The natural lense was removed, a new lense put in its place, and the tiny
incision sutured. The difference was immediate.

The laser surgery you refer to is a procedure that wouldn't have helped me
any. A cataract is a tiny hole in the lense itself, a common situation with
people over fifty. One cataract might not bother a person too much, might not
even show up in an eye exam. They don't have to change their glasses but amybe
once every four or five years (normal for older people who wear glasses).

But a person with serious cataracts (like me) starts having to change their
prescription quite often. In my case, since I drive for a living I get an eye
test every year. And the last four or five years, I've had to change
prescriptions every year (a $400 or more expense anymore).

An optomitrist suspected cataracts, and gave me a test for it. He was right.

I wish I could get a `before' and `after' photo of the difference between the
eye I just had worked on and the eye yet to be worked on. The contrasting
images would amaze you! The new one crystal clear, unblemished, the colors
sharp and vivid.....the one still to be worked on blurred, fuzzy, color
changes dingy-looking, melting one into the other, detail of small things like
scratches, or dents go unseen.
