subject: Excel Hyperlinking

From: Chris Robinson

All,

I'm sure I've come across this problem before but can't seem to figure it
out now. The problem is with Excel (2000). When you create a spreadsheet
you can insert a hyperlink into a cell (as I'm sure most of you know).
This works fine when you run the spreadsheet from the original location but
the hyperlink adjusts itself when the spreadsheet is moved elsewhere.

One of our users sent an e-mail with a spreadsheet attached. The
spreadsheet (located on
"\\server\share\directory\LinkingFile.xls", for example) had a
hyperlink to a file "LinkedFile.xls" in the same directory - this
works fine on his PC as he runs the spreadsheet from it's location on the
server. However, when he e-mails it to anyone the link now points to
"x:\mail_attachements\LinkedFile.xls" - i.e. Excel appears to be
creating a relative link to the file and not an absolute one (i.e.
hyperlink remains the same regardless of the location of the linking file).

I've tried to put the destination in quotation marks but this doesn't help.
I've had a look on google and I can't seem to find anything more on this -
anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Chris.
