subject: Need help in locating a plane wreck

Yeah we tried to find a plane that supposedly went down in a river up in
Maine about ten years ago. The FAA was of limited help as their
investigation was not particularly thorough, a combination of it being a
private aircraft and not too many witnesses so what are they going to
investigate ???, type of attitude.
The local newspaper archives were more help as was the state library
archives and state historical society. This last resource may not be as
useful for you if the date of the actual wreck is too recent.
Another source of information is the court of probate should there
have been any fatalities stemming from the wreck. Somewhere there will
be an estate to be settled which may include an insurance company who
would have paid benifits from the loss of the plane. Now this is where
the sticky part comes in. Accourding to current USA law if there exists
such a company then they technically own the wreckage as it has not been
"abandoned". NOAA and the state law library can help with the statutes
that apply if you are planning to salve the wreckage in any way. In our
case that didn't apply as we were trying to find the wreckage for the
family in order to locate the final resting place of a family member who
had died in the crash.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
