Chevy's first production V8 was much earlier. 1917 I do believe. The modern 
small block engine was born late in 1949 and underwent 5 years of testing and 
refinements to be offered in the 1955 model year. All in all, it's a rather 
dependable engine. This squealing in the lifters.... what did they finally 
come up with to fix it? Were these hydraulic?
