Networks cancel programs which fall below a certain level in ratings, but
there is a 'grey area' where shows that are promising are placed "in
hiatus"...they may re-appear, when a new show 'fails', possibly re-tooled, or
unaired episodes held back and dropped into the schedule to 'sample' the
demographics.
HIGH INCIDENT was one of those placed into hiatus, with ratings high enough
to not allow it to be cancelled outright...the press announcement from ABC
was that it was to be a mid-season replacement (again) in this season, but
I've not seen anything as yet.
HI was re-tooled after the first three episodes, the writers apparently
flogged, and the directors sent to film school...the improvement in the
episodes was marked and dramatic.
Ratings were flaccid through the third, then had a steady increase each week
after that...until the last episode, which was high enough to beat the
comedies it was up against...and why ABC didn't outright cancel it at the
season end.
Topic? Uh, er...it's an example of how ratings will determine the future of
any show, especially the TREK franchise, since it is both syndicated and
network broadcast materials...
Yeah, that's the ticket...
