The one confusing thing about using GCC under OS/2 is that what is widely regarded as the "best" version of it is part of a unix emulation package. EMX. "EMulate uniX". Using GCC under EMX, there are two libraries you can link with. One produces native OS/2 programs that make system calls to OS/2. The other produces EMX programs that make system calls to the unix emulator (a DLL under OS/2, a dos extender under dos.) You don't have to compile for the unix emulator when using the EMX version of GCC, but you need the unix emulator to RUN that version of GCC because they ported as little as possible and emulated the rest. (That way they can upgrade to newer versions of GCC easily as they're released.)
