Saw this while catching up on older mail etc... Since I've been busy over
the summer months... Nice to see you are still about...
I think I know what you were saying......
Helmets should not cause overheating, but not neccessarily keep you cooler...
but the important question is... THAN WHAT?
The foam is mostly for energy absorption (impact), but it does prevent
any heat resulting from sun rays on the external shell from reaching into
the core of the helmet, thus the helmet will remain cooler than if it
'heated up' all the way thru.
The other side is that body heat should be moved away by adequate ventilation
flow thru the space between the foam and the head (provided by the spacing
pads)... However many times this space is clogged up by hats, hair, or
trying to use a smaller shell than required for aesthetic purposes...
thus defeating the design... again the airflow has to be unimpeded if you
wish to stay cool... or in bad weather you impinge it a bit to warm up...
helmet covers close up vent holes, hats fill up the free air space, etc.
Like I said, warmer or cooler than what? You should be able to adjust the
system to your needs... and if it is VERY hot out, you have to be careful
anyway because you can not adjust things to be cooler than ambient...
beyond evaporative cooling effect due to airflow...
Anyhow it's almost winter, so don't get too hot, eh!
