On (13 Dec 96) Don Depue Rambled On To Robby Dittmann...
RD> I've been scanning some of the messages about UPS's, and I'd like
RD> some help, because I am thinking of getting one. I noticed that some
RD> people were saying that a computer UPS could not handle the strain of a
RD> fish tank. This confuses me. I would have thought that my computer
DD> I have been watching this topic for some time, so I would like to
DD> give you my input on your question. First, a very quick statement
DD> on my background...I owned and managed a tropical fish store for
DD> over 10 years, and have owned and managed an electronics retail and
DD> service store for 20 years. With that out of the way, YES, Bobby, you
DD> CAN run your pump from a UPS. However, there are a few things that
DD> have to be considered...every UPS has a maximum wattage output,
Don, it is just not simply the Wattage, I have a Back-Ups 400 (watt)
UPS for my 386, from the book:
CAUTION: The output waveform of this ups is a sine wave
approximation suitable for use with modern computer supplies. Other
loads may malfunction or the ups could be damaged.
In particular, FERRORESONANT type regulating transformers are not
recommended. If in doubt, please consult the equiptment
    manufacturer or the factory.
What if one plugged their Neon light with its transformer in?
Does a air pump use a ferroresonant regulating transformer?
That IS the danger I meant by using a Computer UPS
with non computer equiptment, some UPS may not be a problem,
others cannot be safely used with certain types of electronic
    equiptment.
I had a old 200 watt Ups long ago, in a blackout I put a lamp on it
and it burned out, bulb was 60 watts... thing simply had a sudden
burning smell and went, became a door stop.
UPS made for computers are made to run equiptment made for
computers, not safe to try non computer stuff unless SURE it can run
    them
There MUST be general purpose UPS out there too for
    non computer equiptment.

... "Rub ME," said the Genie...."to hell with the lamp."
