Your post prompted me to conduct a little searching of my own.   
I've previously done a little reading on the golem legends. 
The homunculus is of less interest.  I'm trying to imagine where 
you're going with this, and I think I have a fairly good idea. 
 
I've got a few thoughts I'd like to share with you on a number of 
related subjects, but they're not easily organized, because they're 
linked to a lot of different sources and what I'd prefer to be 
simple posts ends up being like writing a term paper.  So, what 
I'd like to do is point in a direction and appeal to you for a  
little help.   
 
First, Adam.  He was given a domain.  He named animals and everything 
in his domain.  As the story proceeds, it is revealed that he has  
not followed instructions.  He attempts to hide this fact, but it  
is to no avail.  There's something in this short little synopsis 
that might be linked to mysteries that you've been contemplating. 
 
What is it about the proscription of numbering people?  How is it 
that a king, a president, an employer or any kind of manager or 
governor can properly do his or her duties without having an accurate 
census?   
 
The force that causes all to receive a number, a mark, etc. is  
linked to deception and mystery.  Well, if you were trying to  
eliminate mystery and deception, you would begin to nail things 
down.  You would positively identify people.  You would count them 
to make sure that no snakes have snuck into your domain.  So,  
you might say it is the snake, the deceiver, that causes all to  
receive a number, a mark, etc.  Look to see who is blamed when  
Adam is linked to an attempt at hiding what he has done.  Then, 
look to see who is blamed or credited with having moved David to  
number his people.  There are two different entities involved here. 
Finally, recognize that all receive a number, a mark, etc.  Not 
just some.  That's what it says.  Even the "resistance movement" 
is numbered and marked in their foreheads.  That's what it says. 
It might be two different sets of numbers, two different alignments 
or allegiances, a division of the people, but all are counted in 
one form or fashion.  Isn't that the way you read it? 
 
I could be way off here.  So, I'll wait for some feedback on that.
