I found a little bug in that program you posted.

The problem occurs in line 42.

42>      order(programmers, stop_fixing_bugs_in_old_version);

You can't call order(programmers, stop_fixing_bugs_in_old_version)
as you have done because the direction flag has not been set. Your
assumption that the direction flag was set is incorrect as it has
never been initialised. This call will definitely fail.
