That's the spirit. I'm into progrock for about a year and a half now, is that
still newbie? You will certainly find new bands you like, and some you
dislike. Don't be bothered in that case, give them a rest and try it again.
If that fails, concentrate on other bands. There's enough music out there!

I got into it through Pink Floyd, and Marillion is second on my list. Fish is
up there somewhere, too, but he has done very few impressive things since he
left Marillion, IMHO. I've tried Jethro Tull for a very little bit, but I
didn't find it that interesting. Things will probably change if I get time to
listen to it. Rush is unknown to me.
For early Genesis: really do try them, they're great. Genesis' _Selling
England By The Pound_ is remarkable, (also features 'I Know What I Like',
covered by Fish on _Songs from the Mirror_).
Yes is even better. My first album was _Close To The Edge_ (and in fact, it
is still my only real album. The others are a compilation and a live/new
studio). I didn't like it at first, but you really have to give it a chance,
get into the rhythm, get used to the style, the breaking points, the unusual
sound of Jon Anderson's voice, ...

I haven't heard any Porcupine Tree, but it is next on my 'to explore'-list.
Don't miss the opportunity of seeing a band you might be interested in!

Be careful! Some of the bands discussed here are extremely obscure. Try to
get on with the bigger ones first (those that sound the least exotic, forget
Xaal, Zuehl, The Half-Rotten Oranges on LSD (I'm just making that one up),
...).
Another warning: don't try to find everything people tell you is 'good': you
will end with a mountain of bad cd's and an empty wallet. Try to listen
before you buy.
I will do one recommendation: If you're very much into Pink Floyd's early
70's (Atom Heart Mother Suite, Echoes, perhaps Careful With That Axe, Eugene)
you'll probably like Tangerine Dream. They're (mostly) instrumental,
psychedelic and minimal.
