subject: Backup Power

RD>I've been scanning some of the messages about UPS's, and I'd like some
help,
RD>because I am thinking of getting one. I noticed that some people were

I have a large UPS that handles 3 computers, my aquarium, and a few
other items.
You would need to calculate the power usage, but in my case the aquarium
uses significantly less power than any of my computers.
RD>me. I would have thought that my computer would draw siginificantly more
RD>power than a heater and an air pump. Also, I noticed that APC (the maker
of
RD>my computer UPS) was advertising in AQUARIUM FISH magazine. Does anyone
hav
RD>any experience with this brand on their fish tank?
From what I know APC makes pretty good uninterruptable power supplies
and their prices a very good. I would suggest getting one of the cheap
models and you really don't need all of the power conditioning that a
computer would require. One thing you might want to check into (there
are worksheets on this) is how much runtime you will get with your UPS.
Typically the runtime is in minutes which is enough time for most people
to save their work and shut off their computers. As you know, for an
aquarium having 15 minutes of backup power is almost meaningless.
There is an internet UPS FAQ that _really_ goes into details about
various UPS stuff. If you want I can e-mail it to you, or give you the
internet URL.
