AMEN

A Few years ago our help desk rolled out a new version of a Powerbuilder
App. Novell's Serving FTP on the workstation quit working. They contacted
the developer, a real hot shot ( actually was a very good developer), His
reaction 'Doesn't do that for me, They can use the command line FTP'. Okay
fine what use to take me 30 seconds would now take me 4 to 10 minutes to
traverse the directory tree on the other computer. Our Users had MVS FTP
Jobs that quit working . Semi Production - Jobs were submitted by the Users
and Non Supported by IT ( a lot wasn't supported by them /Us). Daily Weekly
monthly etc.

I had a backup of my PC which I restored to a different location. Took me
two weeks in my spare time comparing file by file the differences in the
application, then the windows files. The SOB had included his personal Ini
file which specified password use for Serving FTP, Totally irrelevant for
his application. If I or my boss or some of the users had their way he would
have been executed. For his 'Can use the command line ftp' if no other
reason . I really wanted to get a baseball bat with 'IT is supposed to make
people MORE productive Not LESS' and 'chat' with him and a few others in
our IT department
