This happened on opening day, in a game between Seattle and Boston.
Seattle has runners on first and second, one out. The batter hits a low
pop-up (or high line drive) towards second base. Boston's Nomar
Garciaparra (I love that name!) and John Valentin converge on the ball and
both back off at the last second. The ball hits Seattle baserunner Edgar
Martinez, who is touching second base at the time, but has not yet passed
either Garciaparra or Valentin, who are slightly behind second base. After
a few seconds of hesitation, second base umpire Ted Hendry declares the
batter out because of the infield fly rule. Martinez, thinking he has been
called out because the ball hit him, heads for the dugout, and a Boston
player picks up the ball and tags Martinez, who is now off the base.
Double play? Or is it?
YOU BE THE UMPIRE!
a) double play, Martinez is out because he was tagged off the base
b) Batter is not out (no infield fly), Martinez is out because the
ball hit him.
c) Double play, but Martinez is out because the ball hit him
d) Other (please explain)
