Yes, I tried a piece of wood with 2 blank wires connected to the mains.
The mice jump, make a lot of noise, but do not die.
In one of the youtube videos I think they had some water at the bottom,
mouse drawns after some time.
You still need a microswitch somehow to trigger the raspi.
Or 2 electrodes, contact when water gets high enough... (mouse moving)
I use that as water detector for in a boat with a raspi,
one extra transistor needed:

  point 'W' goes to a GPIO input.
The capacitor is to prevent RF sources triggering the thing.
