-> I remember my old 286/12 IBM clone that weighed more than a cinderblock. That -> old MFM drive was huge and heavy. I remember upgrading it's 1200 baud modem to -> 2400 baud. Man that was FAST! LOL! No 300 baud? I forget who it was that gave me a Full height MFM. Either David Thomas or Mike.... Can't remember... My Uncle gave me my first 300 baud modem. I later had issues with it and went to a 1200 baud that had to load a .com file for its drivers to make it "hayes compatible". It was fun in a way, because you could hex-edit the commands to make it have different command sets! I wished I could find the source code to the .com file! It'd be awesome to write a series of various .com files to emulate other modems... Imagine, you load up hayes.com and type in ATI it responds as a Hayes 1200 baud modem. load up USR.COM and it thinks it's a courier hst! load up stupid.com and type ATI and it responds with some TCP/IP Modem ;-) You could really have fun writing BBS software (or terminal software) that upon startup it does an ATI and identifies the modem, figures out what command set your using, then switches to the right init strings... If you really wanted to have fun, make a new file called NonHayes.com that you set the modem to auto-answer by issuing ATS255=1 and reset the modem to factory settings by using ATS0=255 ... Answer the modem with ATZ, and dial with AT&F. .... You could drive a sysop nuts trying to re-map every command from hayes to your screwy set! --- Platinum Xpress/Win/WINServer v3.0pr5* Origin: KF5QEO's Shack (1:396/60) SEEN-BY: 3/0 633/0 267 280 281 402 408 640/384 712/0 620 771 848 770/1 @PATH: 396/60 45 261/38 712/848 633/280 267 |
