That sounds like you're either dealing with bad, bad brakes (ie: slack lines, 
misadjusted, etc, etc) or you're dealing with U brakes, not cantilevers.
Cantilevers are much superior to the U brakes, which makes me think you're 
dealing with the same kind of crap that I have to - for three more days. :)
