As far as I know oversized SMS messages flow into a next messages when the
160 size is exceeded. Many fido messages are within 1K, so some 6 SMS
messages will do, it does not sound cheap or efficient.
But in countries, where there was a poor POTS infrastucture, the jump that
was made by the rollout of GSM (cellphone) it may make sence. Now that
at least GPRS is available, using SMS as a transport is plain silly.
