?? Maybe you could try looking at the registry setings regarding a removable
drive and then compare these to a fixed one?  But like Bob says, it'll
probably have to be something the hardware supports.

I have a mad suggestion if you can't get anything else to work but
desperately need it too (it's mad 'cos it's a bit OTT and will cost you
some).  How's about getting another HDD to match the one you wish to
remove, then installing it and setting it up as RAID (you'll need RAID 1 if
my memory serves me correctly - mirrored).  Have this new drive as diskA
and the removable as diskB - then just swap it out as and when you need.

The drawbacks to this are that it's a daft idea :oP
