You can just use them to catch polar bears instead.

1. Dig a hole.
2. Put some wood in the bottom of the hole and light it on fire.  Wait for it
tu burn down to ashes.
3. Surround the hole with peas.
4. Then wait...

And when the bear comes to take a pea, you kick him in the ash-hole.
