subject: Engineering majors

-> While I don't know about engineering majors in general at the U of A
-> many aspiring engineers fall by the wayside due to week math skills.
I have no info on rates of attrition for engineering majors, although I
don't doubt that some students find they can't cut the mustard. I
believe that happens in all subject areas. There are always persons who
attempt a field of study only to find out that they are unable to
complete it.
My remarks were not about the sci/math talent of such individuals, but
rather to observe that persons selecting engineering for a major
probably feel that the math/sci skills are more important than language
communication skills. Some of them possibly even think that the math/sci
skills are the only important thing! Hence, engineering majors with poor
communication skills can result. Now, there is nothing in my
observations above to deny the fact that some persons can overestimate
their own talents, whether in math, science or any other field. Since
that will also undoubtedly occur, there will be persons attempting
engineering whose math skills will be insufficient and they will have to
drop the program.
