I'm no expert for the "old days", but to me it sounds like a post-Abacab
album. eg, the title track reminds me of Abacab itself. The entire album
is more or less the same mood, probably because of Wilson's kind of
singing.
It's somewhat less commercial, despite "Congo" or "Shipwrecked", i.e.
a smaller palette of songs. Some things sound rather strange for some
minutes, but then you get used to it and it's simply good. (eg The
Dividing Line or Alien Afternoon)
Overall, "Calling all stations" is a really good album; to dream, to
relax, with some new ideas and strange electronic sounds; it feels a bit
melancholic. Let's wait for the creative input Ray Wilson will have on the
next album...
