-> I had to retake the math section.
Doesn't surprise me. :-( What teaching credential do you hold?
Elementary or secondary? Multiple subject or single?
-> Math has always been my worst subject area. I have to work very hard
-> at teaching it because I don't really understand it.
This can be both advantageous and disadvantageous. _IF_ a teacher who
has difficulty with math, really works hard at it until they understand
the concept, they will probably be able to get these ideas across to the
students better than someone who never had any difficulty with math and
just expects it to be obvious to the students. OTOH, some teachers who
have difficulty with math simply memorize little short-cuts and gimmick
and don't really try to understand the underlying theory nor explain it
to their students. Students who are taught math as a bunch of
short-cuts, gimmicks, and memorized rules are seriously crippled for
future math instruction at higher levels.
-> I no longer teach in Bakersfield. I hated the city. It was way too
-> hot, and the principal I taught under was prejudiced. I am
-> handicapped, but it doesn't say that on my records. He chose me
-> sight unseen just by my application and teacher file. Then when I
-> limped into the office a few weeks before school began I could see
-> the disappointment in his eyes. He put down almost everything I did,
-> I just couldn't' stand it, so I let him know mid-year that I wouldn't
-> 't be returning.
Sorry to hear that. My best friend is an English teacher out in San
Bernadino, CA. She has Multiple Sclerosis and is now almost always
confined to a wheelchair. Sometimes she gets around with a walker, on
good days. She was not yet diagnosed with MS when she began teaching at
the school where she now works. She has taken medical leave for several
months at a time. I am just amazed that she continues to deal with
everything, but she loves her job. I do think there is some underlying
discrimination going on against her at the school in certain job
assignments, but it seems to me that in the long haul she is proving
herself and winning out over the skeptics and discrimination.
-> I am currently living in Utah, am married, and have two kids. I am
-> looking for a job right now. I'll let you know how things go.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. What is the teacher supply in Utah
like? Do you have an oversupply of teachers? What subject areas/grade
levels are in high demand? Is it considered a good place for teachers
with respect to working conditions, etc...?
TTYL,
Sheila
