| subject: | When is it a disorder when it is just `different` |
-> Once upon a time being left handed was considered a 'disorder'... and
-> being 'gay' likewise.
WC> I'm left handed and dyslexic.
WC> Dyslexia is tied to poor development of socail skills and I can't
WC> debate that.
Yes and even now if you're 'different' in ANY WAY from what MOST
people are, your 'difference' is seen as an "ABNORMALITY" that MUST be
FIXED....
Recently in our paper there's a feature about a play given by a local
HS (high school) about parents wanting to get their deaf 7 year old a
CI (Cochlear implant)... (don't get me started).
I learned two things from this article.
1. The Deaf (born deaf) community do not regard themselves ad
'disabled'...
2. Besides the FACT CI's do not restore full hearing (tone wise
required for speech indentation for example)- in all individuals and
I will tell you another fact: silence is preferable to noise...
besides these two 'shuts them up every time" facts CI's can pose a
danger (read: serious injury) to the wearer should they receive a blow to
the head.
This info needs to be known by the general public. So when they meet a
latent deaf/deaf or HOH (hard of hearing) person they might THINK before
brightly well intentionally bringing the subject up. ((Especially to a
born deaf ("DEAF" ) person. You may as well stick your hand into
hot fire...
Do us all us hearing impaired persons a favor. Don't. We already KNOW.
I'm working on a witty comeback for next time. Any suggestions? George?
you're my best bet with witty comebacks! :)
How about...(someone Innocently asks : "have you heard of Cochlear
implants..... "Why yes and have you heard of frontal lobe implants?"
7Oh something like that...
...............................
-> What do you think? Is medical science defining conditions based on
-> status quo?
-> I always thought conditions were 'disorders' if they interfere with
-> being able to function in a way that lends to self support...''
-> Give me your thoughts. Thank you.
WC> I think genetics plays a larger role than credited with and
WC> that our evolution as a species lags far behind our social
WC> development.
Yes but people don't take Biology and genetics anymore Wayne. Not
down in the deep south anyway and not unless they WANT to. So most
people wouldn't know what a gene is if their life depended on it or
they rely on the (coughing hacking choking) "christian science"
definition. (let's not go there and say we did.)
Social development does lag yes... and's lagging due to the fact
ignorance and willful stupidity seem to be dominant traits in human beings.
Sell more papers too.
