Hi Jamie Kowinsky,
(sorry, I don't have an Enghlish header yet)

well, I could not get it work but I can recommend DJGPP.It is the DOS port
of unix based ANSI C/C++ compiler gcc (gnu's), it can be freely downloaded
from many internet locations (search for 'djgpp' on any search machine and
you'll surely find one) . Major disadventages of DJGPP are it is hard to
configure and it uses an nonconventional (for intel cpu's ofcourse) assembly
format (while using inline asm.); the licence agreement requires you to write
either free or shareware programs only. The main adventage of it is, you can
compile nearly every unix compatible program or library, others are it is full
32 bit (it comes with its own dos extender), can be extended easily (full
source is avaliable).
Although it does not have an IDE on its own, there is an IDE called RHIDE
which mimics nearly all the capabilities of borland C++ (3.1) IDE and was
written especially for DJGPP (it is possible to use it for other compilers as
well).
It is best to check news from internet as It has been a long time since I
was interested in djgpp..
BTW excuse me for spelling mistakes..
