One thing that gets forgotten.  Does anyone build gear any more?  A
little Novice transmitter for 40 meters costs nearly nothing to build
and can supply loads of fun.  A receiver is a little tougher but not
that bad.  Used gear is easy to come by; an old Swan might go for a
bit over $100.  Many hams will lend an unused rig to someone whom they
feel deserves a break.
