Yet another question (will the boy ever learn). This one might be
a bit off topic, but it does deal with military aviation to a certain
degree (ie, please Mr Moderator, don't blast me for this one).
Is there any way for someone who enlisted in their state's ANG to
become an officer?
The reason I ask is that a buddy and I were brainstorming over an
idea for one of our aviation oriented stories this past weekend. One
of the ideas we came up with was to have a character - who enlisted in
his state's ANG - have become at least a 2nd Lt by the time the story
takes place so he could serve as the Defensive System Officer - EWO
(also not sure of the proper term for a back seater in a USAF/ANG
fighter nowadays) at the time the story takes place.
The snag as I saw it was that I didn't know if such a thing was
even possible. I'm under the impression that all AFR/ANG officers
come over from the active duty ranks if/when they go on reserve status
to fullfill their last two years of military service. Given this, is
there a way for a ANG enlistee to go into OTS/OCS (again...I'm not
sure of the AF/ANG terminology here...been spending way too many years
studying naval aviation) or be given a field promotion so he could
achive a high enough rank to serve in such a position.
Any feedback on this would be appreciated!
