PE> Xiayi personally earnt $2/hr at a dishwashing job, her first
PE> job in Australia.
BL> My first job in Australia paid 6c a telegram, and I could deliver
BL> 20 in 8 hours if I pedalled really hard. But the fact remains.

My first job paid $2 per week. During the week I started at 6:00am and
finished at 8:30am. On Saturdays and Sundays, I started at 6:30am and
finished at about 10:00am. After 4 weeks, I realised that I was never
going to make it by being a paper-boy, so I practiced Billiards and
put myself through school that way.

PE> The address is 20 Hogan Avenue, Sydenham.
BL> Is this supposed to shock me, Paul? Us Newtownites would have killed
BL> to live in a nice place like Sydenham. ROFL!!!

Yeah. When we lived at Stanmore, it was costing 2/3rds of Mums income
for a single room flattete as Paul described. It did NOT have any
sort of Television. There wasn't any kitchen, but we did have an
electric hotplate in the room. There was a communal shower and if
you had any money to put in the slot, you could even get hot water.
The toilet was outside and I don't need to tell you what it was like.
It was a little bit uncomfortable with the four of us living in a
single room with only two beds, but we made do.

BL> If you get the time, visit Probert Street, Newtown near the railway
BL> line. The poofs are in now, and have dolled everything up, but try to
BL> imagine it 45 years ago, with the brothel running in the shop on the
BL> corner, and the SP and sly-grog joint joint halfway up the hill, and
BL> little Bobbie Lawrence running around without shoes, as happy as a pig
BL> in shit.

Gee, what a small world. A friend of mine lives in Probert St.
What number were you in ?

Regards, Brenton
