I think you're thinking of The Fog by John Carpenter. It starred Jamie Lee
Curtis and was about some undead pirates who returned to a small seaside town 
a
century after they were murdered to avenge themselves on their killers'
descendants. It was an original story though, not based on the King story, 
which
is one of my favourites and would make a truly excellent film!
