China introduced broad new controls on its citizens' use of the Internet on
Tuesday. Claiming that the computer network was being used to leak government
secrets and to spread "harmful information," Zhu Entao, assistant minister

Public Security, announced the new restrictions. The law covers crimes from
political subversion to hacking to creating computer viruses. The new law
carries a $1,800 fine and unspecified "criminal punishments" for violators.
