SM>While I won't debate the fact that there aren't many different

 SM>range.

None of which can be bought for the price of the Acurus.
Comparing the Acurus to an Adcom or Rotel combo would be
fairer. Now, the YBA or little Krell integrated will
probably have LOTS more competition, because separates
get alot better as you approach the $2k barrier IMO.
JA> way out of my league in even attempting to discuss them intelligently.
JA> I have, however, been playing with the idea of beginning a tubed
JA> system as I have heard many good things about them, love the warm
JA> sound and believe they would be a tinkerers delight.
But be prepared for some funny looks from non-audiophiles!
"You spent HOW much for WHAT?" :) But my girlfriend loves
the 'little lightbulbs' in my amp.
JA> my speakers very hard at times and very little at others. On CDs like
JA> Kataros Enchanted at live levels, a system really gets a workout and
JA> the power reserve of a larger capacity amp can make a noticeable
JA> difference in both definition and image. The sound stage and image
JA> don't begin blurring during complicated passages as they do on less
JA> capable amps. Here I cannot speak for tube units like yours and would

My Golden Tube is a single ended, zero feedback, class A amp,
so controlling the bass is not its strong point. Like most
tubes, its strength is in its midrange, an area the ear is
most sensitive to. The bass will get flabby when overdriven,
but I can drive them plenty loud w/o collapsing the soundstage.
A push-pull tube amp designed for power, like Sonic Frontiers'
giant 220watt monsters, obviously won't suffer in this arena.
Even SFs 40watt produces reasonable quality bass for such a
small amp. Is it more of a function that higher-powered amps
are typically of better quality, or the fact that they generate
more power? I'm not an electrical engineer, so I don't really
know or care as long as it sounds good.
JA> you notice this blurring or if it stays rock solid. I read recently
JA> some ads for integrated tube amps with 85 WPC advertised for rock
JA> music. Until then I didn't believe the two went together.
JA> nor balance wooden disks on my speaker tops for resonance control
JA> above the frequency range of gifted guard dogs, nor will you find a
JA> single green felt pen anywhere near my CD.
I too laugh at these 'tweeks'. Its one thing to tinker around
on your own (I have a home-grown seismic sink for my CD player),
but quite another to spend big bucks for pucks!
Happy Listening!
