VN :> I read somewhere that there were a lot of places
VN :>that are reconsidering minimum acreages for horses, mainly
VN :>due to the fact that an average pen size is only 16' x 16'.
VN :>The pen must be a given distance, however (slips my mind)
VN :>away from any neighboring dwellings.
Here in our town you must have at least 1 acre to have horses. And your barn
must be 50 ft from the house, 30 ft from the sidelot and 50 feet from the
back lot line. We had to get a zoning variance when we built our barn as we
wanted to set if only about 15 ft. from the sidelot. Luckily, our neighbors
on that side are protected by a little hill, so they didn't mind that we
built the barn closer than zoning required. (Of course that was before they
got a wiff of horse manure for the first time :).) You can fence, however,
right up to your lot line. Some towns around here require at least 1 acre
per horse.
