The Following Was Published in Giornale La Sicilia,
Siracusa, Italy In 1999.
--------------------------------------
Well known Italian genealogist Stephen J. Saviello,
a writer of short Italian stories, wrote an excellent
article on Babbo Natale which was first published in
1998 in the Comunes of Italy Magazine, published
by L&G Publications, P.O. Box 2500, Ventnor, NJ,
US, 08406-2500. The publisher and editor is Grace Olivo,
who has long studied Sicilian genealogy. It has
appeared in various Italian publications and we are
proud to add our name to that list.

In Italy He Is Babbo Natale

Babbo Natale is Santa Claus in the United States, Pere
Noel in France, Father Chtistmas in England and Papai
Noel in Brazil. But, no matter what he is known as in
your country, he remains an awesome character. Babbo Natale
is not to be confused with La Befana who brings gifts to
good children and coal to naughty ones. He looks much
like Santa Claus, but he has a longer coat and a
longer beard.

In Italy, Babbo Natale fits in with the toast to the
holidays, festive meals with a slice of "panettone" or
"pandoro" (traditional Italian Christmas cakes), mostarda"
(Italian sweet fruit pickles) with "mascarpone" (Italian
soft cheese), and "zampone" (pig's trotter stuffed with
seasoned ground meat) with mashed potatoes. It is a time
of gift giving, card games and festivities.

As in the United States, Babbo Natale is a fairy tale
for children, acted out by adults. Everyone gets involved
in this fantasy - the little ones who await Santa Claus'
arrival and the adults who pretend to believe.
