From _The New York Teacher_, March 4, 1996
"The Rand Corporation, a Washington think tank, has determined that
performance assessments rarely cost less than $20 per student, while pen
and paper tests rarely run more than $1.
But that doesn't mean performance assessments - which gauge
students' ability to complete hands-on-tasks - aren't a good investment.
Rand social scientist Brian Stecher told "Education Daily" that the
high caliber of such tests can offset the costs. In the test he
studied, students used many hands-on materials, such as a pendulum,
stopwatch and model car. Further, such tests can shed light on the
learning process that multiple choice tests don't.
