You guessed it; dropped one too many times. As a play by play fan I
took it everywhere including camping trips. The GE superradio was only
$45 at the local Best Buy store, not too bad. It is the perfect radio for
the play by play fan. IMHO

On the other hand, it opens the potential audience for MLB to the
whole world. Every time a new medium has picked up MLB there has been the
fear that it would somehow reduce the participation in the previous
technology. i.e. when radio came along they were afraid that no one would
go out to the park anymore. On the contrary, more fans were created by
listening and more fans wanted to go to a game. I think the reason behind
pulling the plug on internet radio broadcast of MLB is a rule about
competing organizations not broadcasting within a 50 mile radius of any
team's ballpark. (or something like that).
I tried out the game simulator on one of the WWW sites during the
playoffs last year. I downloaded a small applet that made an animated ball
park on the field and the players moved around to mimic the game. The time
lag was pretty bad, about 2 minutes as I recall, but it was really funny to
watch. It reminded me of the stories of the early days of remote play by
play when telegraph operators would send messages of the progress of the
game and a person would move player cutouts around on a magnetic mimic
board. I hope that MLB takes advantage of a potential world audience in
some fashion.
