-> This echo is for the enjoyment of "retrocomputing". Any computer system, -> be it a mainframe all the way down to a tiny T/S 1000, is on-topic here -> as long as it is not currently being manufactured. Hardware and software -> discussions are also on-topic. You bring up a good point. I had an instructor in the 80's I knew that kept a main frame in his closet in his room. He also had 2-3 personal computers there. A Commodore 128 and a Zenith PC for sure.... I used to enjoy playing on his Commodore 128. Especially at the time, I had the Commodore 64, and knew so little about the 128. I especially loved using CP/M mode! The mainframe he had in the closet, if I remember correctly basically ran on CP/M as well. For the longest time, I always thought one day, when I got my own place, I'd get me a main frame, and setup terminals all throughout the entire house... Have each room wired for serial ports to connect terminals to it... Then things changed... Now, what I had wanted to do with the mainframe can be done with my Raspberry Pi and wifi or wireless access points connected to the wifi! Gone are the days of the old mainframes... True, there are still places that use AS/400's, but not the same thing... Few companies refusing to modernize.... A lot of companies are also using "Thin Clients", which have potential. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/WINServer v3.0pr5* Origin: KF5QEO's Shack (1:396/60) SEEN-BY: 3/0 633/0 267 280 281 402 408 640/384 712/0 620 771 848 770/1 @PATH: 396/60 45 261/38 712/848 633/280 267 |
