I've read quite a few newsgroup comments about this, and I saw
some of the footage, of him getting out of his burning truck and
putting the gun under his chin (they said beforehand that the
shooting itself wouldn't be shown, and it wasn't).
I thought that there was supposed to be a few-second delay that
would stop that sort of thing from being broadcast. Or perhaps
the delay was only aimed toward keeping certain words off the
air, and this was visual.
From what I've read, several stations re-showed the shooting a
number of times as part of later news broadcasts.
The odd thing about it is that I imagine the story was only
newsworthy because freeway traffic was being stopped.
