I started my BBS on a 25 Mb HDD. It was part time at that stage although it
had a dedicated line, reason being it was to noisey and in my room (couldn't
move it elsewhere). I also had a machine with a 40Mb HDD that was linked to
the BBS machine via a parallel cable and FastLynx server/client s/ware.
Both of these machines were 286 10Mhz machines, only one had an EGA monitor.
The BBS took off well.
Later I got a 386sx20 with a 120Mb HDD, and with that *INCREDIBLE* amount of
space I was able to expand my BBS more than my wildest dreams. Then came the
200Mb HDD, and the BBS sat with that for almost a year, still a very popular
system.
It now sits in a 486dx2-50 with 3Gig HDD space. 2G of that came from a
donation of a drive from a user, and replaced the 200Mb mentioned above
(whihc was $60NZ second-hand). The 486 came from a donation of a tape-drive
from another user, which I swapped for the motherboard+CPU.
My system has been runnin straight for almost 3 years now. I've had a lot of
users, and a few decent donations which have really helped.
It's a struggle, but hang in there. You have a better start with 220Mb of HD
space than any other SysOp I personally know, or most cases I've heard of
(including some who used dual 360Kb floppies).
Keep going. It's a struggle at times, but it's *always* worth it.
Cya..
