Perhaps it is one of those English/American language things but here
in Australia they sell pine poles for fences that have been treated
with creosote (according to the supplier). They are black in colour
and have a "gummy" feel to them. Also, if you don't were gloves it seems
to dissolve the skin on ones hands. In a bushfire (wilfire) they EXPLODE!
If it wasn't so serious it would be spectactular!
There is a paint type product here called "creosol" which has lost popularity
to poly-urethane products. They are easier to work with and the smell is
not quite as hard to live with.
