Hmmm, haven't seen Bactroban anywhere. Is it a vet-only product?
As for the vasoline, you may be right, but with a small bird like a
tiel, and the normal human penchant for "if a little is good, a lot is
better", I think that using petroleum-based products is a recipe for
potential problems.
