subject: Single Sex Classes

RICK PEDLEY spoke of Single sex classes to DAN TRIPLETT on 07-10-96
RP>But one could argue the same thing about an all-black or all-white
RP>school, the purpose being not to exclude one race, but to enhance
RP>the education of the included race. I don't see any real difference
Like my previous post pointed out. One reason for the all-male class
would be to eliminate the distractions the opposite sex would have.
Surly you aren't suggesting that blacks would have the same distractions
as the opposite sex? Besides, an all-male class (or all-female class)
could be made up of any race combinations. I am not talking here about
segregation though some would like to link the two together and
strengthen their weak argument. Single sex classrooms are not an evil
idea.

RP>once you strip away all the historical background. I think the crux
RP>of the matter is when a segregated school (of whatever sex or color)
RP>eliminates the opportunity for the excluded sex or color to enjoy
RP>the same quality of education, the same resources, and the same
RP>quality of teacher.
I have also suggested that if Mr. Smith had an all-male class he may
indeed have an all-female class the next period. How is it that such a
thing could be equated to a lack of equal quality education, resources,
and quality teacher.
If I go to a different high school than you, I may in fact suffer from a
lack of equal quality education, quality resources, and quality
teachers. So then do you suggest that we have a single national school
where all students everywhere gather in the same public building and go
through the same courses with the same teachers so that all American
students can enjoy the exact same identical quality education etc......
You went on about all male academies and suggested that if the purpose
of the all-male status is to preserve the historical aspect of the
institution that segregation is ok? I wonder if it is necessary in this
country to strip away all institutions that practice in any way shape or
form segregation of any kind. I think of the Boy Scouts and the Girl
Scouts. Are girls being denied the same experience as the boys (they
have different leaders/teacher)? This idea of calling everything
"segregation" doesn't seem intellectually honest.
The concept of a single-sex classroom, conceived for the right purposes,
is not necessarily a bad idea and certainly does not fall in the same
argument as racism, sexism, or segregation.
If one is opposed to single-sex classrooms, oppose it on it's own merits
and quit borrowing from other arguments. Can your opposition to single
sex classrooms stand on it's own two feet?
