Just heard on the news that US forces covered 300.000 square meters (that
is a whole lot of American football-fields) of the historical Babylon site
some 80km (50 miles) south of Bagdad and turned it into a huge parking lot.
 
The fundaments of the old city have been damaged and at places destroyed by tanks.
 
2.600 year old brick constructions have been badly damaged and
archaelogical material from the site and its excavations has been used by
US troops to fill sand bags.
 
The report is from the British museum.
 
As a side note, there never was any fighting there, there never was any
insurgency there either.
 
Well ... the Taliban destroyed the Bamyan Buddha statues, the Americans
destroyed Babylon ...
