subject: Interview w/Rich Garcia

-JB> Hello, Greg. Quoting your message to Paige Miller:
-JB> GC> ... if he [Garcia] weren't the cream of the crop, he wouldn't have
-JB> GC> been umpiring in the playoffs.
-JB> I could be mistaken, but I think that the latest
-JB> contract with
-JB> the umpires eliminated the subjective selection
-JB> process, and put
-JB> playoff and world series assignments on a rotational
-JB> basis.
I thought that after the debacle in the fifth game of the 1975
World Series - where Armbrister interfered with Fisk, and Larry
Barnett ruled "no interference", and on the same play the third
base umpire left his post to listen to the argument at home plate
(and missing a critical putout at third) that they scrapped
rotational assignment for post-season and only went with the best.

In any event, Garcia *IS* one of the best.
