        This would STILL put the full load on the caps, which is what you 
would be trying to avoid using the variac. You don't want a full load on them 
(even for a short while) until they've had a bit of time to see if they can 
'reform' themselves. Granted, you'd know of a short by now ... :-) but even 
caps that work fine for a while may fail before long. It would be prudent to 
begin at least a casual search for replacements.
