Hi Jeff Edmonson, hope you are having a nice day

Dynamites definitely the right word in this case. I need to try and
find spares for both rigs. Especially the hallicrafters, as it has
all of the original hallicrafters stamped tubes. Heck, I've already
got a person that wants a shot at it and the speaker with the silver `h'
on it, should I decided to sell. (not snarding likely, I like old rigs)
Meanstwhile, it looks like I'm going to have to do a bit more work
on the hq-170. I finally heard a call on 15M plus traffic on 160M.
And I heard something like packet on 6M at 53.2+/- and what might have
been voice at 52.3+/-. But the only choices are for AM, CW, USB, LSB
and I think DSB. The packet(?) wasn't hard to lock on to, but the
other signal was pretty bad. Best results were on usb.
The 10M band though seems to be dead. I can't even pick up the
signal from the on board calibrator. I would suspect someone
tried to tune it down to 11M, but even then I should get something.
I'm thinking that maybe one of the coils has opened up and that's
why there's nothing there. Somewhere I've one of those xtal osc
modules like on mb's for the 14.414 reference, but it's at 28.333.
That would give me something I can inject in the early stages
to see if there's something open.
Since all the other bands work quite well, (picked up 3 russian
music stations on 20M @ S9+) and the ant is a 20 odd ft stretch of
wirewrap wire. I think the problem lies either in the transformer
that couples it to the ant (one for each band) or the coil that
runs to the rf amp. (lightening flash while on 10?)
-=> Yours sincerely, Paul Williams KB5IVG <=-
(just checked across the ant terms. 2 - 2.5ohms all bands.) :/
